Solar pricing frustrates buyers for one reason: the same roof gets quotes thousands of pounds apart, with no explanation of what differs. This guide gives you the benchmark numbers for 2026, then unpacks the four things that actually move a quote — so when your quotes disagree, you can see why rather than guess.

One rule before any numbers: every dated figure below carries its date. Solar prices, VAT treatment and export rates all change, and any site quoting them without a date is already suspect.

The 2026 benchmark: what installation costs per kW

The most reliable price signal in UK solar is the installation data reported through MCS, the certification scheme nearly every domestic installer works under. That data — published through the official solar PV cost statistics — puts the England average at roughly £1,565–£1,590 per kW installed as at spring 2026.

Translate that into whole systems and typical fully-installed prices look like this:

Two notes on reading that table. First, regional labour costs move prices 10–15% either side of the average — London and the South East sit high, much of the North and Midlands lower. Second, the per-kW rate falls as systems get bigger, because scaffold, survey and paperwork cost roughly the same on a 3.5 kWp job as a 6 kWp one. That is why the jump from 8 panels to 12 usually costs less than the first quote suggests it should.

A useful sanity check: divide any quote by its kWp figure. A long way either side of £1,565–£1,590 per kW deserves an explanation — in either direction. Expensive can be justified (slate roof, in-roof trays, difficult access, premium inverter). Suspiciously cheap usually means something is missing, and the missing thing is nearly always one of the four items below.

The four things that move quotes

1. Scaffolding — £600 to £1,200

Almost every roof job legally requires safe working-at-height access, which in practice means scaffold from a separate trade. It is typically £600–£1,200 of a domestic quote. This is the first line to check on a cheap quote: if scaffolding is not itemised, either it appears later as an extra or the installer plans to work in a way you do not want on your roof. 2. Inverter class — string, hybrid, or micro

A budget string inverter and a battery-ready hybrid inverter can be hundreds of pounds apart, and neither is automatically right. If you are confident you will add a battery within a couple of years, paying for the hybrid now avoids replacing a nearly-new inverter later. If you will not, the string inverter is the honest choice. Shaded roofs complicate this further: optimisers or micro-inverters earn their premium only where shading justifies them, and an installer specifying them on an unshaded roof is padding the quote. Whichever class is quoted, remember the inverter is a consumable on a 25-year system — expect to replace it once, at roughly £800–£1,500, somewhere in its 10–12 year typical lifespan.

3. Paperwork handling — MCS, DNO and certification

A proper quote includes the installer handling MCS registration, the Electrical Installation Certificate, and the grid paperwork — the G98 notification on small systems, or the full G99 application (which must be approved before energisation) on most battery and larger systems. The G98 vs G99 boundary is worth understanding before you compare quotes, because “we’ll sort the paperwork after” is both a price difference and a risk difference. The MCS certificate in particular is the gateway to export payments: no certificate, no Smart Export Guarantee registration.

4. Roof type and mounting

Concrete tile is the baseline. Natural slate adds labour and breakage risk; machine-made clay varies; in-roof (integrated) systems add trays and flashing work but recover some cost in tiles you no longer need; flat roofs need ballasted frames and a wind calculation; ground mounts add frames, groundworks and a trench. The same 4 kWp array can honestly differ by £1,500 or more across those mounting types. If two quotes for your roof assume different mounting approaches, they are not comparable line-for-line.

VAT: 0% now, 5% from April 2027

Domestic solar and battery installations — including retrofit battery-only installations — currently carry 0% VAT in the UK, applied automatically by the installer with nothing for you to claim. The zero rate is time-limited: under VAT Notice 708/6 it runs to 31 March 2027, after which the rate reverts to 5%. On a typical system that difference is worth roughly £300–£550.

Treat that date as a fact, not a sales tactic. It is not a reason to rush a decision by Friday; it is a reason not to drift for a year if you are otherwise ready. Any installer using it as same-day-discount pressure is telling you about their sales culture, not the tax system.

What you get back: the payback side of the equation

Cost is half the maths. The other half is what each generated unit is worth, and there the hierarchy is stark:

  • A unit you use yourself is worth your import price — around 26p per kWh for a typical household on the price cap as at summer 2026 (the Ofgem price cap resets quarterly, so check the current figure).
  • A unit you export earns your Smart Export Guarantee rate — leading tariffs have typically paid somewhere in the low-to-mid teens of pence per kWh during 2026, but rates vary widely by supplier and change often, so compare before you register.

How to compare quotes without a spreadsheet headache

Ask every quoter to itemise the same four lines: scaffolding, inverter make and class, paperwork handling (MCS, EIC, DNO), and mounting/roof allowances. Then check three more things:

  1. Was the survey real? A quote produced without anyone looking at your loft timbers, fuse board and shading is guesswork, and guesswork becomes “extras” on installation day.
  2. Is the installer MCS-certified — verifiably? Check the company on the MCS register yourself rather than taking a logo’s word for it. “Government-approved” is not a thing; certification is.
  3. What outlives the installer? Panel warranty (typically 25 years performance), inverter warranty (typically 10–12 years), and an insurance-backed workmanship warranty that pays out even if the firm ceases trading. The paperwork is what protects you, not the promise.

Do that and the mystery between quotes usually disappears: you find one quote excluded scaffold, another specified a hybrid inverter, a third priced slate fixing properly. None of them was necessarily dishonest — they were just quoting different jobs.

The counter-argument: batteries are the fastest-moving part of the market. If you retrofit later, get the hybrid inverter and the G99 conversation right first time — and site the battery properly, which is a safety standard, not a preference.
