Solar panel myths vs facts
The claims you'll meet while researching solar, tested against 2026 UK reality — including the ones that flatter our own industry.

| “Solar will reduce my bill to zero” | Almost never. You still import at night and in winter, and standing charges remain. A well-designed system with a battery typically cuts the electricity bill by half to three-quarters. Anyone promising zero is overselling. |
| “Solar adds 14% (£32,000) to your house value” | You will see this figure quoted widely. Honestly: it is too high as a blanket claim for most homes, so we won’t pretend it applies to yours. Some banded studies show a modest uplift for energy-efficient homes; treat any uplift as a bonus, never the business case. |
| “Panels don’t work in winter or on cloudy days” | They work, at reduced output — UK panels generate year-round, with roughly 70–80% of annual yield arriving from March to October. Winter output is real but small; the system is sized and the payback modelled on the honest annual figure, not the July one. |
| “Solar is maintenance-free for 25 years” | Partly true — and worth conceding: the panels themselves usually just sit there and self-clean on most pitched roofs. But the inverter works hardest and typically needs replacing once in the system’s life (~£800–£1,500, often years 10–12), and an unmonitored system that quietly stops earns nothing. | “Any electrician can install solar” | Legally an electrician can work on it; practically, an installation that isn’t MCS-registered cannot access Smart Export Guarantee payments, and roof mounting is a trade of its own — fixings into rafters, weathertightness, wind loading. | “You need planning permission for solar panels” | Usually not in England — rooftop solar on most houses is permitted development. The rules were rewritten on 27 August 2026 (SI 2026/896): roof-slope panels keep the 0.2 m projection limit, while wall-mounted panels on houses gained a 0.4 m allowance. Listed buildings, some conservation-area elevations and larger ground arrays still need consent. |

The pattern worth noticing: the myths that hurt buyers most are the flattering ones — free panels, zero bills, guaranteed house-value jumps.
