Two quotes for the same roof can differ by £3,000 and both be "correct" — they're pricing different jobs. Four lines explain most of the gap. Scaffolding is £600–£1,200 of a domestic quote and some cheap quotes quietly exclude it. Inverter class — a budget string inverter versus a hybrid that's battery-ready — is several hundred pounds and determines your upgrade path. Paperwork handling: whether the installer runs the DNO application, MCS registration and building-control notification for you, or leaves you to discover what's missing at house sale. And roof type: slate costs more labour than concrete tile, in-roof systems add trays and flashing, and flat roofs need ballast engineering. Ask every quoter to itemise those four lines and the mystery usually disappears.

The self-consumption ladder: why a used unit beats an exported one

Every kWh your panels generate goes one of two ways. Used on site, it replaces a unit you'd have bought at your import price — roughly 26p. Exported, it earns your Smart Export Guarantee rate — roughly 12–16p on the better tariffs as at mid-2026 (rates move on ~30 days' notice; always check the live rate before choosing a supplier). That two-to-one gap is why self-consumption drives payback, and why the design decisions — battery, east-west split, diverting surplus to hot water — matter more than squeezing the hardware price. Your MCS certificate is the gateway: without it, no SEG registration at all. You don't have to export to the supplier you import from — shop the rate.

When is it NOT worth it?

A north-only pitch, heavy permanent shading, a roof needing replacement within ten years (fix that first — or make it an in-roof install at re-roof time), or a home you're leaving within a couple of years. We'd rather tell you at survey than sell you a 15-year payback.

Why not just take the cheapest quote?

Because the cheap quote is usually pricing a different job: no scaffold line, a budget inverter, no G99 handling, anchors fixed to whatever's nearest. The £1,000 saved up front is the £1,000 that decides whether the system performs for 25 years. Itemise, then compare.
