Second, the planning environment is supportive — the council wants roofs generating. Third, none of this means grant-funded panels for most owner-occupiers: schemes such as ECO4 are tightly means- and property-tested, and the honest position is that you are buying a long-life asset whose return depends on installation quality and how much of the output you use.

The Victorian and Edwardian belt — Clarendon Park, the West End, Highfields, South Highfields. The interwar ring — Evington, Knighton, Western Park, Rushey Mead. Semis with hipped roofs and concrete or clay tile. The hip is the quiet constraint: it trims the usable rectangle, so a truthful design frequently lands at 8–10 panels where the street view suggests more. These are otherwise the city’s most predictable installs — rafters at regular centres, straightforward cable routes, often a garage for the inverter and any battery.

Post-war estates and later growth — Braunstone, New Parks, Beaumont Leys, Hamilton. Trussed roofs under interlocking tile, the fastest roofs in the city to work on. On the newest estates the question is rarely the roof and more often the consumer unit: modern boards accept the new circuits cleanly, but a survey still confirms spare ways, earthing arrangement and surge protection rather than assuming.

Across all three eras, one Leicester-specific note: the city’s dense street trees around Victoria Park, New Walk and the older suburbs are an asset to live beside and a real shading variable. Any quote whose yield model ignored your actual tree line is a brochure, not a design.

The week of the install, on a Leicester street

Nationally, domestic solar in the UK returns roughly 850–1,050 kWh per kWp per year; the East Midlands sits in the middle of that band — behind the south coast, ahead of the far north. We will not conjure a precise Leicester figure because none honestly exists for your roof until orientation, pitch and shading are measured. Leicester sits in the East Midlands licence area of National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) — the network operator formerly known as Western Power Distribution, and a separate company from your supplier. The rules are national; the counterparty is NGED. Systems whose inverter stays within 16 A per phase (about 3.68 kW) follow G98: commission, then notify NGED within 28 days. Anything above — which includes most battery pairings — follows G99: application first, approval before energisation, and occasionally an export cap as a condition. Sequencing is the professional tell. The G99 application belongs at survey stage so that approval, not scaffolding, is the thing you never end up waiting on. If a quoting firm waves this away with “we handle it later”, ask them what happens if NGED comes back with an export limit after your money is spent.

The differences between your quotes will mostly be explained by four lines — scaffolding (including rear-entry access on terraces), roof covering (slate costs more labour than tile), inverter class (hybrid-ready versus basic string), and whose name is on the MCS and DNO paperwork. Make every quoter itemise those four and compare like with like; a rear-entry scaffold over a shared passage, for instance, prices differently from a front tower, which is one legitimate reason two Leicester quotes for the same nominal system can sit hundreds of pounds apart. Do I need planning permission on New Walk or in Stoneygate? On New Walk itself — a conservation showpiece with listed Georgian buildings — assume nothing and check everything; listed status always requires consent. In Stoneygate and the other conservation areas, permitted development usually still applies but front-elevation arrays deserve a written check first. Who is the DNO for Leicester — and is it my supplier? National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands licence), and no — your supplier bills you, NGED owns the wires. Your installer deals with NGED for the G98 notification or G99 application; you should never have to.

Can my business get help with solar in Leicester? Commercial roofs follow the Class J permitted-development route with different limits, and the council’s procurement stance favours suppliers generating on site. The stronger financial lever for most firms is the Annual Investment Allowance — solar qualifies for 100% first-year deduction via the AIA (not “full expensing”, whatever other sites claim; confirm treatment with your accountant).

Picture a typical project — a scenario, not a client. A red-brick terrace near Queens Road, both owners at work weekdays. The battery pushes the system past G98 limits, so the G99 application is filed with NGED at survey and approved before the scaffold is even booked.
