A shoe town’s roofs, and what they ask of an installer
If you’re a Northampton homeowner weighing up solar, your starting point is the roof over your head — and Northampton’s roofs were shaped by an industry. The town’s boot and shoe boom threw up street after street of Victorian red-brick terraces through the mid-to-late 1800s, in Semilong, St James, Far Cotton, The Mounts, Kingsley and Abington, most of them originally roofed in slate. Northampton grew in three big waves, and each wave installs differently.

Interwar and post-war suburbs. The 1930s semis of Kingsley, Abington Park’s fringes and Spinney Hill, and the later post-war estates of the eastern district, are the town’s easiest hosts: two decent roof slopes, concrete tile or clay, accessible lofts, standard two-lift scaffold. Most quotes here should look boringly similar, which makes an outlier easy to interrogate.
The growth areas. Northampton’s expansion west and south — Upton, Wootton Fields, the Pineham side — is modern trussed-roof housing where the engineering questions are minimal and the design questions (panel count, inverter class, battery sizing) dominate. New-build roofs take fixings predictably; the differentiator becomes string design around dormers and the increasingly common EV-plus-battery pairing.
Grid connection here means National Grid Electricity Distribution
Northampton’s electricity network is owned and operated by National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) — the former Western Power Distribution, renamed after its 2022 absorption into National Grid — under the East Midlands licence. Two routes apply. Systems whose inverter output stays at or under 16 A per phase (about 3.68 kW) go through G98: fit, commission, then the installer notifies NGED within 28 days. Anything larger — and a solar-plus-battery system usually is — needs a G99 application lodged with NGED and approved before energisation. At domestic scale that approval typically takes weeks rather than months, but it belongs at the start of the programme. An installer who treats G99 as an afterthought is choosing your export limit for you, because NGED can and does impose limits on systems presented to it retrospectively.
One practical note: your DNO is not your supplier. When something on the network fails, 105 reaches NGED; when your installer talks about “applying to the grid”, NGED’s East Midlands team is who they mean.
Planning in Northampton: mostly permitted, with named exceptions
The default position is friendly. Rooftop solar on most Northampton houses is permitted development under GPDO Part 14 Class A — no application — and from 27 August 2026, SI 2026/896 relaxes the geometry for wall mounting, allowing wall-fixed panels to stand up to 0.4 m proud of the wall on a house (0.2 m where the wall faces the highway); panels on the roof slope keep the 0.2 m limit.
The exceptions are specific and worth naming. The Boot and Shoe Quarter conservation area protects the factory-and-terrace streetscape north-east of the centre; the Derngate conservation area covers the streets around 78 Derngate, the townhouse Charles Rennie Mackintosh remodelled in 1916–17 — his only completed English commission. In conservation areas, panels on the elevation facing the street can need consent, while rear slopes usually remain permitted development; on listed buildings (78 Derngate’s neighbours include several), listed building consent is always required. West Northamptonshire Council’s planning pages carry the conservation-area maps, and a written planning position should be part of any survey you pay a deposit against. Where a front-facing slope is the only viable one, a flush pitched-roof installation design done sympathetically — dark-framed, all-black panels, set below the ridge — is frequently the difference between an approval and a refusal.
The council picture — read it honestly
The reference data for this page records West Northamptonshire Council’s 2030 net-zero target, and that was indeed the pledge the council signed up to in 2022 for its own operations. Honesty requires an update: the administration elected in 2025 has announced its intention to scrap the local net-zero targets and refocus spending, leaving the UK-wide statutory 2050 commitment as the operative framework. What does that mean for a homeowner? Practically, very little — permitted development rights, 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, Smart Export Guarantee payments and NGED’s connection process are all national mechanisms that don’t depend on council policy. But it does mean you shouldn’t expect a council-run solar purchase scheme here in the near term, so independent quotes and the MCS benchmark price carry more weight in Northampton than in cities running group-buying rounds.

Northampton’s location does its solar market a quiet favour. When you interview installers, ask what commercial work they carry — the answer is a useful proxy for process discipline on your roof.
A realistic scenario on a Northampton terrace
Treat this as an illustration, not a case study. A two-storey terrace off the Racecourse: slate roof, rear slope facing south-east, loft checked and rafters sound.
